First Congregational Church of Chatham

Project Overview

Delphi was awarded this historic renovation project by the building committee at First Congregational Church in Chatham, Massachusetts on Cape Cod.

The project involved building a new organ chamber for the church’s rare custom-built organ, improved handicap accessibility with the addition of a multi-stop elevator, new bathrooms, expanded administration offices and new robing room in the sacristy.

The construction work included a massive underpinning effort to shore up the 1830 structure while excavating to a depth of 24’ to introduce footings for the organ chamber addition and to accommodate the required elevator shaft. The organ itself, valued at nearly $1m was painstakingly disassembled and trucked to Quebec for cleaning and restoration before being returned and installed in its new location.
